The Javelin is a high performance, single trapeze, 14ft two handed skiff. It is powerful with a lightweight hull, which allows for exciting sailing, while still being manageable in stronger winds. PDSC has a large Javelin fleet with most weekends seeing at least 15 boats on the water. This makes for competitive and friendly sailing, no matter where you are in the fleet.

Apr 22: Javelin State Championships

Dan & Richard (aka junior meatball) sailing Windrush to victory in the Jav States
The 2012 Western Australian Javelin State Titles were held at Perth Dinghy Sailing Club over the Easter weekend. A combination of light winds and competitive sailing saw positions change frequently throughout all the races. This resulted in lots of interesting racing, tight mark roundings and close finishes. The 13 boat fleet consisted of competitors ranging in age from 15 to 70 something, proving that the Javelin class is enjoyed by a wide range of people.
The series did not start well, with the first race cancelled after the wind dropped out and leading boat Phlegmbuoyant (Katie Bundred and Kym Pearce) were two boat lengths too slow to cross the finish line within the 2 hour time limit. Fortunately, the wind picked up for the remainder of the series allowing five races to be sailed. PRO Steve Burt did a great job in challenging winds – thanks Steve!
Richard Thomas, sailing his Dad’s boat (Windrush) with Dan Moore performed consistently well in all races to take out the State Championship. Richard also won the Junior Champion trophy.
Defending champions Steve and Blake Vance (in borrowed boat, Himalayan Woman) sailed well in all races to finish in second place. Fat Boys with Cherub sailors Tom Batt and Andrew Hacket narrowly took out third place from Racing Red (Russell Hanrahan and Chris Woodward).
Full results:
1 Windrush – Richard Thomas and Dan Moore (also Junior State Champion)
2 Himalayan Woman – Steve Vance and Blake Vance
3 Fat Boys – Tom Batt and Andrew Hacket
4 Racing Red – Russell Hanrahan and Chris Woodward
5 The Edge – Rod McGregor and Greg Moore
6 Skid Mark – Tim Cochrane and Paul Cochrane
6 Phlegmbuoyant – Katie Bundred and Kym Pearce (Female State Champion)
8 Kraka – David Jones and Dave Von Felten
9 The Boss – Ben Mawson and Dan Bright
10 Fuzzy Logic – Paul Kunzli and Craig Warner
11 Mac – Rob Thomas and Jesse De Rooy
12 Just For Fun – Tore Neidel and Peter Olesen
13 Impact 2 – Rob Devonish and Shaun Pickrell
It was great to see newcomers to the class, Tore Neidel and Peter Olesen sail their first regatta in a Javelin, finishing all races in the process.
Junior skipper, Tim Cochrane (sailing with his Dad, Paul), led the final race at the last top mark rounding and finished a very credible 3rd in this race and sixth overall.
The fleet all carried Tack Trackers, allowing for some interesting post-race analysis. Even though the maximum speed was a sedate 12 knots (Impact 2, Rob Devonish and Shaun Pickrell), there were plenty of close calls and one spectacular capsize from The Edge (Rod McGregor and Greg Moore) on the finish line of the last race to top things off.
The Javelin sailors who competed in the regatta would like to thank all of the volunteers and supporters for making this event possible.
